About the Role

The San Francisco Adult Probation Department (SFAPD) is seeking a Criminal Justice Specialist II to conduct complex research and analytical studies related to the criminal justice system. This role involves program administration, coordination, and consultation, with opportunities to specialize in pretrial justice, reentry, or violence reduction. The position aims to enhance public safety, support victim restoration, and facilitate successful reentry for justice-involved adults.

Responsibilities

Carry out complex research and analytical studies of socioeconomic factors.
Administer programs related to the criminal justice system.
Coordinate and potentially supervise subordinate staff.
Provide consultation to outside groups and agencies on criminal justice matters.
Provide real-time communication, coordination, and case support between Pretrial Services, courts, jails, and law enforcement.
Serve as the primary in-court representative for Pretrial Services.
Attend arraignments and other court proceedings, providing case-specific updates to judicial officers.
Enter detention facilities to gather data, verify custody status, interview individuals, and resolve discrepancies.
Engage in ongoing communication and collaborative problem-solving with justice partners.
Participate in planning and coordination meetings.
Support smooth case processing across agencies.
Supervise client participation in court appearances and ensure compliance with pretrial expectations.
Provide real-time monitoring of client behavior and engagement in court.
Interact directly with clients before and after hearings, offering resources and guidance.
Observe client activity in court environments, identify concerns, and communicate updates.
Evaluate client needs, reinforce court instructions, and provide information about services.
Oversee case management activities for individuals on pretrial release.
Supervise case managers and ensure coordinated delivery of services and referrals.
Monitor the quality and consistency of client service plans.
Ensure compliance with pretrial supervision requirements.
Collaborate with the Reentry Division, community treatment providers, and criminal justice partners.
Coordinate assessments, referrals, and support services for clients.
Resolve barriers to service engagement.
Ensure case managers follow established protocols, documentation standards, and evidence-based practices.
Design, coordinate, and evaluate strategies that promote community safety and reduce violence.
Serve as subject-matter leads in violence prevention and intervention.
Apply evidence-informed approaches to interrupt cycles of harm.
Support rehabilitation of high-risk individuals.
Bridge the gap between law enforcement, government agencies, community-based organizations, and service networks.
Facilitate strong partnerships and effective information-sharing.
Develop and implement violence-reduction initiatives.
Coordinate targeted outreach efforts.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to address factors contributing to violence.
Conduct strategic assessments, develop intervention plans, and evaluate program outcomes.
Provide guidance to partners and deliver expertise in high-risk case management.
Coordinate and deliver reentry services to individuals transitioning from custody to the community.
Assess client needs and develop individualized service plans.
Connect individuals with housing, behavioral health, employment, education, and supportive services.
Collaborate with correctional facilities, courts, community-based organizations, and government partners.
Meet with clients prior to release, arrange referrals, and resolve service barriers.
Monitor client progress.
Support data collection, program evaluation, and system-level efforts to improve reentry outcomes.

Requirements

Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in a social or behavioral science, preferably sociology or criminology.
Two (2) years of experience in a position which involved the conduct of analytical research and studies in the field of social or behavioral science in a public defender’s office, community-based organization or a non-profit agency.
Experience must include major responsibility for functions such as program administration, case management, data collection and analysis, and report writing.
Systems-focused criminal justice expertise, with the ability to analyze and support initiatives across pretrial decision-making, violence reduction strategies, and reentry outcomes.
Data-informed and equity-driven approach, using research, assessment, and program evaluation.
Collaborative practice across sectors, working effectively with courts, community-based organizations, and justice partners.
