About the Role
The Senior Accountant performs a broad range of professional accounting functions, including maintaining financial records, preparing and analyzing financial reports, and supporting compliance with accounting standards. This role provides guidance and oversight to accounting staff, manages key accounting processes, prepares GAAP and GASB compliant financial statements, and supports grant and fund accounting activities.
Responsibilities
- Analyze, prepare, review, and record financial transactions for accuracy, coding, and compliance with GAAP and GASB.
- Manage the monthly close process, including journal entries, accruals, and deferrals.
- Maintain and reconcile the general ledger and sub-ledgers.
- Perform balance sheet reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.
- Prepare and maintain supporting schedules, trial balance, and workpapers.
- Maintain and track restricted, unrestricted, and program-specific funds.
- Record and monitor grant revenues and expenses by program.
- Prepare grant payment requests and support disbursement processing.
- Assist with time tracking and cost allocation for grant reimbursement.
- Account for investment activity, including income, fair value adjustments, and amortization.
- Manage lease accounting, including right-of-use assets and liabilities.
- Prepare and record journal entries and ensure proper documentation.
- Conduct 10-15 annual financial desk reviews of grantees.
- Assess grantee compliance with requirements, policies, and regulations.
- Review grantee financial records, internal controls, audit reports, and documentation.
- Identify, document, and communicate findings and recommendations.
- Oversee accounts payable and receivable functions, including invoice processing, collections, and disbursements.
- Manage cash receipts, bank transactions, and reconciliations.
- Ensure timely and accurate recording of all transactions.
- Provide guidance and review the work of junior accounting staff.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting processes.
- Support audit preparation and external reporting requirements.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and accrual-based accounting.
- Experience managing full-cycle accounting responsibilities independently.
- Proficiency in accounting systems and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with nonprofit, fund, or grant accounting.
- Familiarity with investment accounting and lease accounting standards.
- CPA certification or progress toward certification.
- Experience conducting financial reviews, audits, or compliance assessments.
- Prior experience in a small team or single-accounting environment.
