About the Role
Basecamp Research is seeking individuals passionate about developing extraction and sequencing workflows to enhance data generation. This role involves building DNA/RNA pipelines with a focus on metagenomic recovery from diverse sample types and utilizing sequencing workflows from extraction to library preparation, including short and long-read technologies and HMW extraction.
Responsibilities
- Align and prioritize R&D projects with the R&D Lead, Director of Production, and wider teams.
- Develop and optimize metagenomic extraction methods for various sample types, including low-biomass and inhibitor-rich matrices.
- Develop DNA/RNA purification methods for viruses and microbes, including HMW extractions for long-read sequencing.
- Apply and develop virology-focused workflows from extraction to sequencing.
- Design experiments to compare extraction chemistries, sample processing, library preparation, and sequencing performance.
- Define success criteria, generate validation data, and support method transfer to production.
- Prioritize development work based on scientific value, data generation impact, feasibility, and timelines.
- Work confidently within a CLS 2 environment and with genetically modified organisms.
- Implement or develop novel methods for library building for Next Generation Sequencing.
- Work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams as a project lead or team member.
- Analyze experiments and present findings to the organization.
- Provide mentorship within the team and organization.
- Horizon scan for emergent methodologies that could add value to projects.
- Develop protocols for current and new NGS methods and lead associated R&D projects.
- Collaborate with other R&D sites and Data Science to develop new protocols for challenging target genes/DNA modalities.
Requirements
- A minimum of 5 years' experience in technically focused molecular biology and sequencing projects for method development in a commercial R&D or large project-based academic setting, ideally in non-model organisms.
- Strong understanding of metagenomic extraction methodologies across a range of sample types.
- Experience developing or applying high molecular weight (HMW) extraction methods.
- Track record in delivering molecular methods for DNA and RNA extraction and sequencing in end-to-end workflows.
- Proficiency in experimental design and statistical comparison of method performance.
- Ability to troubleshoot experimental results.
- Pro-active and motivated in developing new methods and continuous improvement.
- Experience working within multi-disciplinary teams to deliver projects.
