About the Role
Michael Joseph publishes popular authors in genres like women's fiction, crime, thriller, cookery, memoir, and lifestyle. We aim to bring their books to a wide audience, creating beautiful packages that stand out in a crowded market.
Responsibilities
- Create high-quality designs for various titles based on creative and commercial briefs.
- Manage projects from pitch to print, ensuring they stay on track.
- Commission illustrators and designers, developing their concepts.
- Manage project budgets and ensure spending stays within limits.
- Read and analyze book text.
- Plan and manage project schedules.
- Research innovative design and book ideas, initiating new concepts.
- Collaborate with Editorial, Production, Sales, and Rights departments.
- Communicate effectively, including negotiation.
Requirements
- Exceptional typographic and layout skills.
- Strong design eye and creative flair.
- Ability to translate ideas into innovative and commercial packages.
- Proven track record of developing high-quality book cover concepts and designs across various genres and styles, including for high-profile brands and authors.
- Clear communicator with experience collaborating with illustrators and other freelancers.
- Engaged with and motivated by big ideas and current trends.
- Exceptional organization skills with the ability to manage multiple projects with different lead times.
- Ability to ensure work is delivered to the highest standard and on schedule.
- Up-to-date and accurate administration and file management.
- Understanding of design for print.

Salary/Compensations
- Circa £34,000 annually, dependent on skills and experience, plus bonus and benefits. This will be pro-rated to the duration of the contract.
