About the Role
In this role, you will manage complex short-term disability, long-term disability, and/or disability income benefit claims within our group and individual business, contributing to excellent client outcomes and supporting Wawanesa's continued success. You will bring expertise to high-impact files, including escalations, complaints, litigation, and other sensitive or complex claims matters, partnering with internal teams and external stakeholders to advance matters with care, clarity, and sound judgment.
Responsibilities
- Review and assess disability benefit claims and other claims, making decisions and implementing claim management strategies for resolution.
- Conduct complex investigations as needed for open files.
- Collaborate with clients, claimants, reinsurers, healthcare professionals, and providers to obtain claim documentation, provide status updates, and answer questions.
- Review complex and divergent policy wording to ensure decisions align with policy terms.
- Communicate decisions verbally and in writing effectively and courteously.
- Effectively settle submitted claims, complaints, or claim disputes.
- Coordinate rehabilitation and other services to facilitate a successful return to work, including complex multi-provider programs.
- Maintain records of personal workload and claim settlements.
- Respond to claimants and inquiries in accordance with company service standards.
- Perform any other assigned duties.
Requirements
- 3-5 years of claims management experience.
- Post-secondary degree or certificate in a medical or related field preferred.
- Demonstrated advanced skills with Microsoft Office, including Excel and SharePoint.
- Excellent ability to interpret and apply contract wording.
- Good management of deadlines and time.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills while maintaining service standards.
- Demonstrated customer service orientation with an empathetic approach.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify relevant information and potential impacts.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to communicate at the appropriate level for the target audience, including internal and external clients via written or verbal communications.
- Ability to manage sensitive information while adhering to privacy guidelines/laws.
- Actively working towards completion of disability management courses or NIDMAR is considered an asset.
- Bilingual in French and English is considered an asset.
