About the Role

The Chief Deputy Adult Probation Officer (CDAPO) at the San Francisco Adult Probation Department (SFAPD) provides leadership to organize, plan, and manage the department's daily activities, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures. This role supports the Chief Probation Officer (CPO) in strategic planning, staff development, budget management, and operational oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate strategic plans for client rehabilitation and staff safety.
  • Collaborate with agencies, law enforcement, stakeholders, and community groups on programs and services.
  • Analyze staffing and performance data to ensure operational equity and efficiency.
  • Develop and train staff, assisting the CPO in key division operations.
  • Assist in preparing and controlling the annual budget.
  • Stay current with trends in leadership development, criminal justice, technology, and evidence-based practices.
  • Prioritize and practice staff wellness, professional development, and engagement.
  • Promote employee recognition.
  • Design strategies with subordinate staff for performance assessment, feedback, and evaluation.
  • Ensure subordinate staff manage data and documentation for reports and records.
  • Direct the development and implementation of goals, initiatives, programs, policies, and strategic plans.
  • Manage resource allocation and oversee service levels.
  • Ensure grievance and discipline practices align with MOUs.
  • Set objectives and monitor subordinate staff performance.
  • Assist in establishing departmental personnel management policies and procedures.
  • Oversee internal affairs and investigate citizen complaints.
  • Coordinate complaint resolution and recommend corrective actions.
  • Represent the department with the City Attorney and other agencies.
  • Consult with the Mayor and/or Board of Supervisors staff on behalf of the Chief.
  • Coordinate with other City departments to address service needs.
  • Represent the Department before commissions, boards, committees, and media.
  • Lead division directors and managers to discuss program problems.
  • Establish project priorities and review management reports.
  • Evaluate service levels and performance standards.
  • Advise staff on current developments, personnel matters, and policy changes.
  • Work non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • May be required to be armed.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Criminology, Corrections, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or a closely related field, or a Juris Doctorate (JD).
  • Five (5) years of full-time supervisory experience in field services, institutional work, related special programs in a California County Probation Department or California Corrections Facility, or a government agency, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Criminology, Corrections, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, a JD, or a closely related field may be substituted for one year of the required general supervisory experience.
  • Must meet all minimum standards for Peace Officer under Section 1031 of the Government code.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident eligible for and who has applied for citizenship.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be fingerprinted for criminal record checks.
  • Must be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
  • Must be a high school graduate or possess an equivalent.
  • Completion of any state-mandated trainings to meet peace officer requirements within one year of hire.
  • Must pass POST law enforcement background investigation.
  • Must pass a psychological examination prior to appointment.
  • Conviction of a felony or a crime that would have been a felony in California is a bar to employment as a peace officer.
