About the Role
The Plumber And Steamfitter I installs, repairs, alters and maintains fluid transmission systems, sanitary fixtures, heating systems, low and high pressure steam lines, condensate lines, water lines, sprinkler lines, and sewer lines. This role also involves performing trade-related asbestos abatement and repairs on building systems such as pneumatic control systems, HVAC systems, cooling towers, and pumps. The position requires the use of specialized testing and diagnostic equipment and collaboration with Control Technicians to maintain building systems integrity. Additionally, the role may involve functional supervision of lower-grade employees.
Responsibilities
- Instructs, advises, and mentors employees, technicians, and journeymen on the operation and maintenance of campus plumbing, steam, mechanical, and HVAC systems.
- Responds to, inspects, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs all plumbing, steam, sanitary, and mechanical systems, including cooling towers and pumps.
- Performs preventive maintenance services and utilizes computer programs to operate, maintain, calibrate, and adjust building HVAC systems.
- Assists Engineering staff in drawing review, inspection, and troubleshooting for new equipment, buildings, upgrades, and replacements.
- Drives a motorized vehicle around campus to residential buildings.
- Installs, repairs, alters, and maintains various piping systems and fixtures, estimating labor and materials.
- Cuts and threads pipe using appropriate tools and equipment.
- Uses oxyacetylene torches and/or welding equipment to braze coils and pipes.
- Drills or cuts holes through floors, walls, and ceilings, and performs asbestos abatement.
- Performs related duties such as erecting scaffolding, rigging, laying out drop cloths, fabricating metal products, sharpening tools, cleaning equipment, preparing work reports, and training other employees.
Requirements
- Current, valid Massachusetts Plumbing and Gasfitting License/Journeyman.
- Possess a current, valid Class D driver's license.
- Must be willing to take an annual pulmonary function physical test.
- Experience as a journeyman plumber.
- Associated Worker Certificate / Asbestos Abatement Worker License (Required) - Applicant has six (6) months from date of hire to obtain.
- Pump Certificate (Required) - Applicant has six (6) months from date of hire to obtain.
- Metasys Facility Operators Certificate (Required) - Applicant has six (6) months from date of hire to obtain.
- Ability to provide off shift coverage as requested.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques, practices, materials, and tools used in the plumbing and steamfitting trade.
- Working knowledge of Massachusetts Plumbing and Gas Codes and their applications.
- Working knowledge of the general and unique hazards and safety precautions associated with the plumbing & steamfitter trade.
- Ability to read, interpret and work from plans, sketches and oral instructions.
- Ability to make basic assessments of time and materials required for work assignments.
- Ability to supervise and instruct helpers in plumbing and steamfitting tasks.
- Ability to maintain accurate records, logs, etc.
- Skill and knowledge to interpret blueprints, schematics, elementary diagrams, and logic diagrams associated with HVAC systems.
- Knowledge of safety practices, preventive maintenance practices, and the operation of standard testing equipment.
- Skill in using the hand, power, and measurement tools of the trade.
- Skill and ability to work independently.
- Ability to use oxyacetylene torches.
- Must be willing to take an annual pulmonary function physical test.
