About the Role

In collaboration with patients, families, and staff, this role performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures to examine tissue and body structure, providing quality images for interpretation. The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer assesses patients, acquires and analyzes ultrasound data, and uses independent judgment to produce diagnostic information and optimize patient care. This position is grant-funded and contingent upon continued grant availability.

Responsibilities

Performs clinical assessment of the patient and conditions to select the appropriate equipment for the sonography examination based on established protocols.
Performs two patient identifiers and completes hand hygiene. Explains the test to the patient and instructs them on assuming the correct physical position for examination.
Demonstrates ability to assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedures and makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Practices medical and surgical aseptic procedures in accordance with infection control evidence-based practices.
Selects a transducer and adjusts equipment controls according to the area to be examined, depth of field, and other specifications, using independent judgment to acquire optimum diagnostic information.
Pulls correct patient name from list on modality onto ultrasound equipment to maintain a record of test results.
Moves transducer over the specified body area and observes the sound wave display screen to monitor the quality of the ultrasonic pattern produced.
Uses independent judgment to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
Records diagnostic images and data for use by the interpreting physician for diagnosing and archival purposes.
Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.
Performs all quality control checks as prescribed.
Maintains accurate QC logs and audits service records.
Understands and practices proper use of all equipment, never operating equipment inconsistent with manufacturer's or lead person’s instructions.
Completes ultrasound exams consistent with set policies and procedures.
Provides ultrasound call according to the monthly schedule.
Assists with the daily operation of the ultrasound department, including technical errors, transcription of results, and reporting concerns affecting workflow and patient safety.
Provides care appropriate to the condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric, and general population.
Interacts with all individuals in a consistent manner, providing attention, support, and assistance to foster an environment of exceptional personal service.
Serves as the champion of the patient and team member experience by providing an A+ experience to every patient and team member, every day utilizing AIDET principles.

Requirements

Knowledge and understanding of general anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
Ability to engage patients and team members utilizing the CommUnityCare IMPACT Statement.
Basic computer knowledge.
Ability to prioritize and use critical thinking skills.
Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
Effectively communicate with patients and co-workers in a supportive and tactful manner.
