About the Role
At Artificial, we maintain three primary sources of documentation: client-facing product documentation for business users, internal documentation built using docs-as-code, and public API documentation derived from OpenAPI specifications. This role involves managing these documentation sources, ensuring quality, and supporting content creation by engineering and integrations teams.
Responsibilities
- Own client-facing product documentation strategy, information architecture, standards, tooling, and content quality.
- Manage the internal documentation gap backlog, identifying, triaging, and routing issues, and authoring content when appropriate.
- Steward the internal documentation site and public API documentation by setting standards, information architecture, and editorial guidelines.
- Interview engineers about new features to create clear documentation for non-technical readers.
- Act as an editorial reviewer for documentation changes, ensuring clarity and consistency.
- Write and maintain high-value client-facing content, including core product guides and release communications.
- Select, build, and operate the documentation toolchain, including docs-as-code workflows.
- Design and operate AI-assisted authoring pipelines to improve documentation quality and throughput.
- Build the contribution model, including templates, style standards, and review processes, to facilitate content creation by product managers and engineers.
- Partner with the Integrations team to enhance API documentation quality and examples.
- Collaborate with product and customer-facing teams to ensure documentation is delivered with product releases.
- Measure documentation effectiveness through usage, search behavior, support deflection, and client feedback, and act on findings.
- Set the standard for clear technical communication across the company.
Requirements
- 6+ years in technical writing, documentation engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrable experience producing end-user product documentation.
- Sufficient developer documentation experience to credibly edit and improve API guides.
- Hands-on experience owning documentation tooling, including docs-as-code workflows (e.g., Git-based authoring, static site generators, CI pipelines).
- A portfolio or writing samples demonstrating the ability to clarify complex technical material for both technical and non-technical readers.
- Experience working in a fast-paced, technological environment with flexibility.
- Confidence in reading and understanding code and pull requests to identify documentation needs.
- Experience building or substantially restructuring a documentation estate.
- Experience establishing contribution models where engineers and product managers write content that is then edited and curated.
- Practical experience using LLMs in documentation workflows.
- Familiarity with structured documentation frameworks such as Diataxis.
- Familiarity with OpenAPI specifications and generating reference documentation from source.
- Previous experience working in a scale-up environment.
- Background in InsurTech, FinTech, or other regulated industries.
- Ability to pass background checks, including criminal record, credit history, previous employer references, and academic qualifications.
