About the Role
The Toronto Star is seeking current post-secondary students to staff its digital monitoring hub. This is a paid, contract position where students will work alongside full-time staff in a challenging yet supportive environment.
Responsibilities
- Conduct regular checks with police, fire, and paramedics
- Monitor social media and other sources for breaking news
- Provide quick tips to the newsroom
- Perform original reporting for all of The Star’s platforms
Requirements
- Must be eligible to work in Ontario
- Must be a current post-secondary student
- Students enrolled in schools outside the GTA are welcome, but a base knowledge of the region is an asset
- Must be able to work a minimum of two shifts a week
- Must be available for a variety of shifts including weekend, weeknight, and overnight
- A full, unrestricted Ontario driver’s license is not required
- Demonstrate a range of story-telling skills, with a strong emphasis on news coverage
- Demonstrate proven ability to report thoroughly, write well, and organize information
- Demonstrate a commitment to journalism as a career
- Possess strong interpersonal skills
