About the Role
We are seeking a dynamic, sharp-witted, and experienced Opinion Editor to lead and grow the Daily Mail’s US opinion section. This hands-on editorial role requires exceptional news judgment, strong commissioning and editing skills, and a deep understanding of American politics, culture, and global affairs. The editor will shape a distinctive commentary agenda, commission compelling voices, respond to breaking news, build contributor networks, and develop new formats beyond written content. This role involves using audience insights and data to inform editorial strategy and maximize reach for readership and subscription growth.
Responsibilities
- Commission and edit timely, bold, and thought-provoking opinion pieces from diverse contributors.
- Identify and respond to breaking news and trending topics with sharp commentary.
- Maintain the Daily Mail’s distinctive voice and editorial standards.
- Build and manage a network of regular contributors and columnists.
- Ensure columns maximize reader engagement and drive subscription growth.
- Devise and build newsletter and audio strategies informed by audience insights and data.
- Collaborate with news editors, homepage teams, and social media editors to promote opinion content.
- Monitor analytics and reader engagement to inform editorial strategy and optimize content performance.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of experience in journalism, editing, or commentary, preferably in a fast-paced digital newsroom.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a keen eye for argument structure, tone, and narrative.
- Strong news judgment and familiarity with a wide range of political and cultural viewpoints.
- Ability to juggle multiple deadlines and contributors under pressure.
- A flair for headlines and a sharp sense of what gets people talking.
- Adaptability to evolving priorities with a self-driven, entrepreneurial mindset.
- Commitment to results and collaboration.
- Comfortable working with analytics tools and audience data to guide editorial decisions.
- Experience working with high-profile contributors or columnists (preferred).
- Background in political journalism, cultural criticism, or editorial leadership (preferred).
- Familiarity with the Daily Mail’s editorial style and audience (preferred).
