About the Role

The NYCLU seeks a senior staff attorney with 6 or more years of legal experience to conduct litigation and advocacy, focusing on immigration, immigrants' rights, institutional racism, reproductive justice, criminal legal system, LGBTQ+ rights, government transparency, free expression, equal protection, police misconduct, student rights, and surveillance/privacy.

Responsibilities

• Conduct litigation in federal and state courts and administrative forums.
• Prepare pleadings, motions, and briefs.
• Conduct discovery.
• Present oral arguments and handle appeals.
• Engage in pre-litigation analysis and advocacy, including intake evaluation, factual investigations, legal analyses, utilizing FOIL/FOIA, and preparing demand letters.
• Participate in public education through speaking engagements and published writings.
• Collaborate with NYCLU leaders and staff across departments for an integrated approach to injustice.
• Supervise and mentor law students in the summer-intern program.
• Contribute to the professional development of legal department staff.
• Mentor NYCLU staff attorneys.
• Develop relationships with pro-bono partners and networks.

Requirements

• Six or more years of legal experience.
• Demonstrated ability to think strategically and advocate effectively.
• Ability to coordinate with teams working on public-interest litigation or advocacy.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse public-interest setting.
• Ability to foster and support diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
• Demonstrated commitment to the goals and priorities of the NYCLU.
• Admission to the New York Bar.

Salary/Compensations

• Subject to the NYCLU’s attorney salary scale, which is based on years of legal experience (current full-time starting salary for a lawyer with 6 years of experience is $113,500).
