About the Role
The HVAC Mechanic will be responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of all types of HVAC equipment at a Journeyman level of service including air-conditioning equipment, refrigeration equipment, HVAC control systems, and more.
Responsibilities
- Performs maintenance, diagnostic testing, overhauling, installation, and repairs on refrigeration, dehumidification, air-conditioning, ventilation, and heating systems equipment and controls.
- Researches specifications and makes installation corrections to ensure proper equipment function according to tenant agency requirements.
- Performs preventative maintenance, including changing filters and cleaning cooling towers and coils.
- Performs a variety of building maintenance tasks, including adjustments and repairs to HVAC and Electrical systems.
- Functions independently and/or in teams, making decisions and recommendations concerning HVAC operations and maintenance.
- Fabricates, assembles, and installs ductwork and chassis parts using metalworking tools and welding equipment.
- Installs evaporator units in chassis or air-duct systems using hand tools.
- Cuts and bends tubing to the correct length and shape.
- Cuts and threads pipe using machine-threading or hand-threading equipment.
- Joins tubing or pipes to refrigerating units and solders joints to form a complete refrigerant circuit.
- Installs expansion and discharge valves in the circuit.
- Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to power sources.
- Installs air and water filters in completed installations.
- Injects refrigerant into compressors to test systems and adds Freon gas to build up operating pressure.
- Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls for proper operation.
- Tests joints and connections for gas leaks.
- Wraps pipes in insulation batting and secures them with cement or wire bands.
- Replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years (within the past 5 years) of progressive, hands-on HVAC experience in commercial or industrial settings in a large, complex environment.
- Ability to effectively read, write, and speak English.
- Knowledge of computers and basic computer applications.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics.
- Ability to communicate with a wide range of personnel and stakeholders.
- Must be able to work safely from a ladder or scaffolding.
