About the Role
Space Rangers is partnering with a AAA game development studio to recruit a Principal UI Engineer who will serve as the technical authority for user interface engineering. This role involves defining the long-term technical vision for UI engineering, establishing frameworks, patterns, and best practices, and tackling complex technical challenges. The Principal UI Engineer will remain hands-on, prototyping solutions and setting the standard for engineering quality. They will have a high degree of autonomy and influence, partnering with leadership to align technical direction and mentoring engineers to improve the discipline's capability. This role also involves representing UI engineering at the studio level and acting as a technical voice with external partners.
Responsibilities
- Set the standard for how we architect and build performant, robust, data-driven interfaces at scale.
- Define the long-term technical vision for UI engineering.
- Establish the frameworks, patterns, and best practices that our teams build upon across multiple projects.
- Take on our hardest technical challenges.
- Evaluate emerging tools and technologies.
- Make architectural decisions that keep our interfaces reusable and future-proof.
- Remain hands-on, prototyping solutions.
- Set the bar for engineering quality by example.
- Partner with Lead UI Engineers and project leadership to align technical direction across teams.
- Mentor engineers at every level to raise the capability of the whole discipline.
- Represent UI engineering at the studio level.
- Act as a trusted technical voice with external partners, platform holders, and engine vendors.
Requirements
- Extensive, proven UI engineering experience; you have shipped multiple commercial game projects and set the technical direction that others build upon.
- A track record of defining UI architecture and technical strategy at scale; you establish frameworks, patterns, and standards that hold up across teams and projects.
- Expert knowledge of C++, with deep relevant professional experience.
- Deep practical UI implementation knowledge; you break complex designs into reusable, performant components and readily overcome technical limitations alongside UI Design teams.
- Sound engineering judgement; you make robust architectural decisions with incomplete information, balancing long-term technical health against delivery needs.
- A mentoring mindset and influential people skills; you elevate the engineers around you and can align teams behind a shared technical direction without relying on direct authority.
- Considerate communication and presentation skills; you’re able to present complex technical ideas clearly to audiences of all experience levels, both internally and to external partners.
- Comfortable operating with minimal supervision; you set your own direction and make intelligent decisions with the information at hand.
