About the Role
This is a founding role for the first Forward Deployed Designer (FDD) at Artificial. You will establish and define the FDD function, establish its operating model, patterns, and ways of working. You will also grow and manage the team, taking part in hiring subsequent FDDs and line-managing them. Your mandate is to ensure the right problems are solved before configuration begins, translating customer requests into problems, prototyping and testing ideas, and providing credible pushback when necessary.
Responsibilities
- Establish the FDD function, defining the operating model, patterns, and ways of working from scratch.
- Grow and manage the team, including hiring subsequent FDDs and line-managing them.
- Join customer + FDE sessions early for problem framing and discovery.
- Translate requests into problems, identifying user behavior, platform-valid approaches, and recommendations with trade-offs.
- Prototype and test ideas quickly using the most effective medium.
- Provide credible pushback when customer proposed solutions do not address the underlying problem.
- Codify patterns and precedents to move knowledge from individual memory into shared team infrastructure.
- Level up the FDE team’s design instincts through coaching.
- Use workspace signals to surface risks early.
Requirements
- Experience in enterprise/B2B software where the design system already exists, the hard part is framing the right problem and navigating stakeholders, and solutions must work within meaningful technical and organisational constraints.
- Ability to understand technical concepts fluently, including reading and writing some code using an in-house DSL.
- Comfort reasoning about how a configurable system behaves and understanding platform capabilities and limitations.
- Experience managing designers, including line management of a small team (three to five people) and hiring designers.
- Insurance or Lloyd’s experience is a plus, but not a requirement.
- Collaborative skills with an emphasis on product quality.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Experience in a distributed work environment.
- Background checks may include criminal record check, credit history review, speaking with previous employers, and confirming academic qualifications.
