About the Role

This client-facing role involves assisting participants experiencing homelessness, behavioral health conditions, substance use challenges, and other difficult life circumstances to obtain and maintain competitive employment. The work requires sound judgment, adherence to safety and de-escalation procedures, and direct service delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Assist clients in obtaining and maintaining competitive employment consistent with their vocational goals through job coaching, job development, job readiness support, retention support, and referrals to training.
  • Engage clients and establish trusting, collaborative relationships aimed at competitive employment in community job settings.
  • Assess clients' vocational skills and preferences on an ongoing basis.
  • Provide information and support to family members with client permission.
  • Discuss client's preference for disclosure of mental health status to employers.
  • Develop an individual employment and/or education plan with clients, incorporating input from the mental health team and family members.
  • Spend 65% or more of scheduled work hours in the community, meeting clients at homes, workplaces, or other locations, and assisting with job applications.
  • Conduct job development and job search activities individualized to client interests and uniqueness.
  • Conduct a minimum of six employer contacts per week to learn about business needs, describe program supports, and highlight client strengths.
  • Provide individualized follow-along supports to assist clients in maintaining employment.
  • Write job support plans with clients, incorporating input from family members and the mental health team, and adjust plans as needed.
  • Provide education and support to employers as agreed upon by clients.
  • Negotiate job accommodations and follow-along contact with employers.
  • Assist clients in understanding how entitlements will be affected by employment and refer to benefits counseling.
  • Help clients report earnings as needed.
  • Provide outreach services to clients who appear to disengage from services.
  • Return phone calls and react to situations in a timely manner, including returning client calls within 24 hours, addressing job loss/problems within 24 hours, following up on job leads within 48 hours, and meeting clients before job starts and shortly after.
  • Participate in case conferencing at least monthly to coordinate vocational services with mental health treatment.
  • Assist clients in learning about education and vocational training programs.
  • Document all work and efforts in the client management database.

Requirements

  • Education and experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree in mental health, social services, or business.
  • Experience working with people with severe mental illness and/or experiencing homelessness, substance use disorder, or comorbidities.
  • Experience providing employment services is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the work world is preferred.
  • Ability to work as an effective team member is essential.
  • Must secure finger image screening, annual TB screening, and Live Scan.
  • Must be able to pass CDCR background check.
  • Must be able to meet physical requirements of the position, including long periods at a desk/computer, standing, sitting, kneeling, reaching, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and actively working in the field 65% of the time.
  • Demonstrate behavior that supports the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Adhere to all program, funder, and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively and model integrity, fairness, and ethical business practices.
  • Considered for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records as consistent with San Francisco's Fair Chance Ordinance.
