About the Role

This position offers an opportunity for transportation professionals to contribute to the City of Toronto's progressive transportation objectives and future transportation system development. The role involves understanding urban transportation systems, including multimodality, mobility, transport equity, and emerging technologies. We are looking for experienced transportation planning professionals to manage various initiatives, identify strategic needs and opportunities related to growth and development, and create leading-edge transportation policies.

Responsibilities

Contribute to the evaluation of a range of transportation policy choices.
Collect, manage, and analyze demographic, economic, legal, social, cultural, and physical data related to transportation planning.
Participate in the development and maintenance of data management systems.
Design, coordinate, and implement surveys and planning studies.
Organize and participate in meetings to exchange information on development proposals, policies under review, and other planning issues.
Respond to information requests from developers, consultants, other agencies, government staff, elected officials, and the public.
Prepare and organize technical reports, other written materials, and manage files.
Prepare maps, diagrams, charts, tables, and other presentation materials using computer programs/applications.
Assist in monitoring key transportation issues and travel trends city-wide or in districts.
Support communication with and consultation of technical stakeholders and the public.

Requirements

Post-secondary degree or diploma in Planning or Engineering with a focus on transportation issues, or in a professional discipline related to transportation, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with the collection, management, and analysis of demographic, economic, legal, social, cultural, and physical data and information relating to transportation planning.
Experience using corporate computer applications and other computer software such as MSOffice, and GIS software such as ArcGIS.
Demonstrated understanding of and interest in urban transportation systems.
Demonstrated understanding of best practices in the transportation planning field.
Familiarity with the Planning Act, the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process (including Transportation Master Plan process), Transit Project Assessment Process, and the development review process.
Familiarity with public consultation and/or community outreach, public meeting organization and participation.
Ability to interact with staff at various levels.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to maintain strong internal and external relationships.
Strong judgment and analytical thinking skills.
Strong customer service skills, including the ability to respond to public inquiries and concerns related to transportation issues.
Knowledge of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other applicable regulations/legislation.

Transportation Planning is a section within the City Planning Division that is comprised of specialized professionals who combine transportation and land-use planning skills and expertise.
Planning sustainable and interconnected transportation networks to improve people's mobility choices, to create vibrant public spaces and to support economic prosperity, improving the overall quality of life in the City of Toronto.
Leading and being champions of the transportation vision in the City's Official Plan, including development of leading-edge policies on major transportation initiatives.
Providing evidence-based transportation planning technical analysis and best practices, supported by research and analysis of transportation and travel trends in the City and surrounding regions.
Communicating and educating people in a clear and compelling way in undertaking inclusive and transparent engagement and collaboration with stakeholders and the public and providing an important liaison to all related transportation agencies.
