About the Role

The Child Development Specialist will work with children, their parents and other service providers in the assessment of children’s developmental needs, deficiencies, and goals. The Child Development Specialist will be highly knowledgeable in typical and atypical development, recognize the symptoms of a developmental issue, and can offer parents and caretakers advice on how to best work with the child to overcome the problem.

Responsibilities

Conduct home and field visits to evaluate and monitor children's physical and mental development, including social, motor, and cognitive skills.
Engage with children therapeutically using assessment tools like mental development tests, speech assessments, and gross motor games.
Consult regularly with healthcare providers and educators regarding children's behavioral and cognitive levels.
Assess all children in the household for appropriate achievement of developmental milestones.
Collaborate with Care Management Staff to create individualized service plans for children's educational and developmental needs.
Monitor children's progress and regress related to service plan goals.
Provide parenting skills building and training for parents and caretakers.
Offer counseling services and emotional support to families and caretakers.
Conduct community resource development to enhance program linkages.
Provide crisis intervention as needed.
Utilize electronic case management system for accurate client file maintenance.
Comply with charting requirements and data collection mandated by funding sources.
Employ trauma-informed interventions and culturally responsive engagement techniques for holistic program services.
Staff the emergency on-call cell phone on a rotating basis.
Attend requested trainings.
Carry out other duties as assigned by program leadership.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a childhood-related field (psychology, child development, social work, or human services).
At least two years of experience working with persons with severe mental illness.
At least two years of experience working with children with developmental needs.
Understanding of working with the homeless population.
Familiarity with Harm Reduction Model, Housing First Approach, and Motivational Interviewing.
Self-starter with skills and energy to work within the community.
Computer literate.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to travel to various sites.
Ability to speak, hear, see, and write.
Ability to use a computer and related software programs.
Local and/or national travel required, potentially including longer weekday/weekend commitments.
