About the Role
As a Technical Claims Specialist, you will play a key role in supporting Wawanesa's commitment to delivering an exceptional claims experience by providing technical direction, strengthening claims practices, and contributing to the continuous improvement of the claims expertise function.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical direction for complex property claims, including major losses, commercial and agricultural files, litigation, catastrophic events, and other highly complex files.
- Support claims handling strategy, coverage analysis, policy interpretation, reserving, investigations, settlement planning, and resolution recommendations.
- Foster consistent claims management by supporting best practices, documentation standards, file quality expectations, and reserving approaches.
- Identify opportunities to reduce avoidable losses and improve subrogation and salvage outcomes through file reviews, coaching, and practical feedback.
- Mentor and coach claims adjusters, supervisors, and leaders through case reviews, workshops, best practice discussions, and technical learning support.
- Utilize quality results, reports, and operational trends to recommend improvements and strengthen claims practices.
- Participate in major loss reviews, escalations, and complex claims decisions.
- Collaborate with internal teams, legal counsel, external adjusters, vendors, and partners to align resources, manage expenses, and support strong claims outcomes.
- Contribute to national claims initiatives, process improvements, new workflows, technologies, and technical standards.
- Demonstrate analytical, collaborative, and mutualist-driven judgment on every file, while influencing partners without direct authority.
Requirements
- 5 to 10 years of general insurance experience, including complex claims adjusting.
- Experience with commercial and agricultural claims, including co-insurance files.
- Knowledge of litigation and its impact on claims strategy and resolution.
- CIP designation obtained, or equivalent experience.
- Strong knowledge of coverage wording, policy interpretation, case law, and insurance legislation and regulation.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to review information, evaluate options, and recommend practical solutions in a timely manner.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and presentation skills, with the ability to adapt information for different audiences and influence decisions.
- A collaborative approach and the ability to contribute to common team goals.
- Ability and willingness to travel across Canada as required.
