About the Role

This position monitors and inspects routine construction projects or assists with complex projects to ensure capital improvement projects comply with approved engineering plans, contract specifications, and City design and construction standards.

Responsibilities

• Conducts site visits to monitor and inspect contractor work for quality and compliance with contract documents, plans, specifications, and safety requirements.
• Completes daily reports documenting construction activities, progress, delays, issues, and incidents.
• Attends contractor meetings, including pre-construction conferences and progress meetings.
• Reviews payment applications to verify material quantities, calculations, and completeness.
• Coordinates and monitors third-party materials and utility testing for compliance with specifications, standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Coordinates with design teams to resolve conflicts or unforeseen conditions.
• Reviews and verifies change orders for completeness, accuracy, and consistency with contract terms, design intent, and specifications.
• Documents design changes during construction and ensures final as-built plans accurately reflect all changes.
• Coordinates project close-out and prepares project records for archive.
• Responds to routine inquiries and complaints, keeps the project team informed, and escalates issues when necessary.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
• Three (3) years of experience related to civil or facility construction.
• One (1) year inspecting or overseeing civil infrastructure projects to ensure compliance with contract requirements, specifications, and standards.
• Valid Texas Class C Driver License.
• External New Hires must meet the City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite (no more than three moving violations or six Driver Record Evaluation points within 36 months).

Skills

• Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, ordinances, codes, permits, and best practices governing capital construction.
• Knowledge of contracts, including development, language, terms, and conditions.
• Knowledge of horizontal and vertical construction methods, practices, and materials.
• Skill in determining quality of materials, workmanship, and construction methods.
• Skill in making accurate measurements and computing quantities of materials used in construction.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City employees and the public.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
• Skill in handling and prioritizing multiple tasks.
• Skill in resolving problems or situations requiring good judgment.
• Ability to read and interpret plans, maps, and specifications and recognize deviations.
• Ability to climb up and down and walk on rough terrain and in confined spaces with varying environmental conditions.
• Ability to work varying work hours to meet project needs.
• High-level computer skills including Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Adobe or Bluebeam.
• Ability to travel to more than one work location.
