About the Role

The Crisis Assessment Worker, Crisis Assessment Team (CAT) works with clients in crisis to assess the nature and scope of the crisis and take appropriate action consistent with the psychosocial rehabilitation model. This position supports participants at the Mental Health and Addictions Crisis Centre, Reach Out, or the Strathroy Site, collaborating with clients, peers, and the community to enhance mental health.

Responsibilities

  • Complete bio-psychosocial mental health assessments based on crisis management theory, including rapid response, risk assessment, de-escalation, stabilization, and referral.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships to maximize client engagement.
  • Refer to psychiatric clinic as deemed appropriate.
  • Assess adequacy of client resources and supports, making referrals to community resources.
  • Determine the impact of psychiatric symptoms on functioning.
  • Identify risk factors related to relapse and safety of staff and clients.
  • Assess barriers to successful community living.
  • Obtain necessary information from other relevant sources.
  • Ensure assessments incorporate cultural and ethnic factors.
  • Identify areas requiring additional assessment.
  • Provide short-term, psychotherapeutic intervention within the crisis model framework.
  • Perform calmly, competently, and efficiently in emergency situations, respecting client privacy and dignity.
  • Utilize harm reduction principles to identify, reduce, and remove risk factors.
  • Advocate to facilitate access to services and supports for crisis remediation.
  • Support clients in accessing needed resources.
  • Refer clients for additional assessments as necessary.
  • Assist clients in identifying and connecting with personal/natural supports.
  • Provide short-term follow-up support to bridge the gap from referral to engagement.
  • Provide follow-up check-ins with clients accessing services.
  • Have knowledge of community resources relevant to clients, including mental health services and benefit programs.
  • Identify, develop, and maintain links with a wide range of community resources.
  • Assist clients in obtaining needed resources by educating, supporting, linking, and advocating.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of community resources within the mental health care system.
  • Assist in building positive working relationships across the service system.
  • Participate in public education and advocacy.
  • Coordinate and facilitate client linkages to recommended community services and supports.
  • Act as a liaison with caregivers and service providers for a coordinated approach.
  • Provide assistance to clients seeking support, appointments, and information.
  • Provide health teaching and information on coping techniques and strategies.
  • Assist participants in developing strategies for managing health needs.
  • Assist participants in making healthier choices.
  • Collaborate with community agencies to enhance continuity of care.
  • Provide information and advocate regarding resources within the mental health system and community.
  • Collaborate with clients and teams for a holistic approach and development of care plans.
  • Support clients in developing self-advocacy skills.
  • Interact and provide support non-judgmentally, demonstrating sensitivity to client diversity.
  • Assist in motivating clients to learn new behaviors and develop coping skills.
  • Foster healthy interdependence through limit setting.
  • Assist clients in recognizing strengths and minimizing challenges.
  • Provide crisis intervention services and supports on the Reach Out Crisis line via phone, text, and web chat.
  • Respond to voicemails from the Reach Out Crisis line.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with callers and address immediate concerns.

Requirements

  • College Diploma or University Degree in a mental health or addictions related field or a minimum of 3 years of experience in a direct-service role and some post-secondary education in a mental health or addictions related field.
  • Current, satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC).
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work regularly.
  • Successful candidates must have a Police Vulnerable Sector Check completed in the last six months.
  • Interested applicants who reside in the City of London and are in need of a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) are encouraged to apply for one as soon as possible as PVSCs in the City of London are currently taking approximately 5 weeks to be processed and offers of employment cannot be made without receipt of a PVSC.

  • Starting rate: $27.14 per hour (Level 1 - Direct Service)
  • Wage differential: $30.01 per hour for Level 1 - Direct Service, Regulated
  • Grid progression up to Level 8: $34.41 per hour (non-regulated)
  • Grid progression up to Level 8: $37.26 per hour (regulated)
  • Premiums of $2.00 per hour for eligible Evening/Night (8:00pm-7:00am) and Weekend Shifts.
