About the Role
The Assistant Dean of Students will focus on maintaining a positive, structured, and restorative student culture, implementing behavior interventions, and collaborating effectively with students, staff, and families to support the school's mission of empowering students as agents for change.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a positive, structured, and restorative student culture.
- Work closely with the Dean of Students and school leadership team to maintain a positive, structured, achievement-oriented school culture.
- Be highly present and visible throughout the school day to ensure expectations are upheld and build positive relationships with students.
- Proactively circulate through school spaces to identify student needs, prevent escalation, reinforce expectations, and support teachers.
- Support the supervision and coordination of lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and school events.
- Use restorative practices to help students reflect, repair harm, strengthen skills, and return to the learning community.
- Consistently implement schoolwide student systems and expectations.
- Co-create, implement, and monitor individual behavior intervention and student success plans.
- Track behavior, intervention, consequence, and follow-up data accurately.
- Facilitate assigned consequences and restorative responses.
- Maintain accurate, timely records of all student infractions, incident reports, family communication, interventions, plans, consequences, and outcomes.
- Serve as an active member of the Student Support Team.
- Partner with the Dean of Students, teachers, social workers, counselors, and other staff to respond to concerns and coordinate timely supports.
- Attend grade team and student support meetings as assigned.
- Meet with teachers to problem-solve student concerns, reinforce common expectations, and identify practical supports.
- Support student and staff orientation and workshops related to culture systems, behavior expectations, restorative practices, and student support.
- Partner with students and faculty to develop supports and routines that strengthen belonging, accountability, and student voice.
- Remain available beyond regular school hours when needed for crisis response, family meetings, detention, reentry, or evening events.
- Build trusting relationships with students and families through proactive, respectful, solution-oriented communication.
- Communicate promptly with families about concerns, interventions, consequences, and progress.
- Partner with families to create, implement, and review behavior intervention and student success plans.
- Ensure students, families, teachers, and relevant staff understand next steps, assigned supports, and required follow-through.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Enrollment in a Bachelor’s program with a major or minor in education with a minimum of 60 credits required.
- Experience working with youth or supporting students in an urban school setting.
- Experience building strong, respectful relationships with students and families from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong organization, follow-through, communication, and documentation skills.
- Training in or knowledge of behavior management and de-escalation techniques.
- Experience and/or training with restorative practices and collaborative problem solving.
