About the Role
The Recurring Payin team owns the Direct Debit API, powering automated payments into Wise. We are building a platform for customers to easily schedule top-ups or business collections, built on our internal Payin Platform rails. This platform is a critical component of Wise's money-movement capabilities, and we are seeking an engineer to help us build for it. We offer APIs for partners setting up automated funding or pre-authorizations, consolidating use cases like automatic GBP balance top-ups and monthly EUR bill collections for business partners. Our platform allows customers to grant one-time permission for Wise to pull money across various payment methods, including USD bank accounts or EUR-issued bank cards.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services using Java and Kotlin with the Spring Boot framework, deployed on AWS.
- Build and maintain RESTful APIs serving millions of customers across web and mobile platforms.
- Develop and optimize services for the card pay-in payment method, processing approximately £1 billion monthly.
- Design and implement database schemas, and write/optimize SQL queries against PostgreSQL databases for high-volume transactional data.
- Build and maintain event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka for asynchronous processing of financial events.
- Develop and maintain a payment orchestration system for dynamic payment routing across Payment Service Providers to optimize cost and reliability.
- Write automated tests (unit, integration, end-to-end) to ensure the correctness and reliability of financial systems.
- Conduct code reviews for team members, ensuring code quality, security, and adherence to engineering standards.
- Participate in on-call rotations for monitoring and responding to production incidents for Tier 2 critical services.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, analysts, and engineers across teams for cross-functional projects.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, scalability issues, and technical debt in existing systems.
- Ensure development follows security best practices, especially concerning sensitive financial data and compliance with financial regulations.

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team player, with frequent cross-team collaboration.
- Ability to break down complex projects into incremental milestones that deliver customer value.
- Experience in developing web applications and distributed systems in a production environment.
- Experience with common design and architectural patterns coupled with a passion for writing clean, performant, and well-tested code.
- Curiosity and drive for continuous learning and improvement.
- Following and advocating best coding practices, continuous delivery, and code reviews.
- Experience working with relational and non-relational databases, query optimization, and designing schemas is a plus.
