About the Role
Whatnot is seeking an Infrastructure Engineer to manage the critical path between customers and our code. The Traffic team is responsible for the edge, DNS, private connectivity, service mesh, TLS, and internal access, ensuring speed, reliability, and security by default. This role involves partnering with Reliability and Platform Engineering for observability and with Security to manage traffic flow. It's a hands-on, software-first position focused on writing controllers, extensions, and automation to minimize the need for other engineers to think about the network layer.
Responsibilities
- Shape how traffic reaches the edge, including caching, security posture, and routing decisions.
- Build and scale private connectivity for services, accounts, and clusters, ensuring security.
- Enhance the service proxy and mesh layer, tuning for traffic patterns and extending capabilities.
- Ensure name resolution, TLS, and internal access are automated and reliable for dependent engineers.
- Instrument every layer of a request to make network performance legible and quickly debuggable.
- Design for failure cases by building tooling for safe changes and rehearsing failover.
- Use Whatnot as both a buyer and a seller to build the best user experience.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, preferably running the network behind high-traffic applications.
- 3+ years of deep, hands-on experience with Istio and Envoy, including tuning for different use cases.
- Experience writing custom Envoy extensions.
- Deep knowledge of Kubernetes networking, including CNI behavior, pod and service networking, ingress, and inter-cluster traffic.
- Experience operating a CDN at scale, preferably Cloudflare.
- Experience running globally distributed applications and understanding regional differences.
- Experience owning latency-sensitive systems and reasoning about millisecond performance.
- Strong networking fundamentals across DNS, TLS, TCP, and routing.
- Deep knowledge of modern cloud provider networking, particularly AWS, including VPC topology design and tradeoffs.
- Comfortable debugging across boundaries using packet captures, proxy logs, and traces.
