About the Role
Clay is seeking a Data Science Manager to lead its Data Science and Analytics team (DSA). This team acts as the company's center of excellence for experimentation, metric design, insights, and data-driven decision-making across all business functions. The manager will play a crucial role in shaping product and business strategy by partnering with executives to translate ideas into data-backed narratives.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow the Data Science and Analytics team, including managing, developing, recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding talent.
- Establish shared standards for data work and coach the team to achieve them.
- Create team rituals that foster cohesion and support technical growth.
- Set a high technical bar for experimentation, analysis, insights, metric design, and data modeling.
- Ensure the team stays at the forefront of AI innovations in data science and analytics.
- Focus on driving impact by ensuring the team prioritizes work that influences decisions and business trajectory.
- Strategically partner with and prioritize across business units, ensuring adequate support for stakeholders while maintaining high impact standards.
- Ensure partners make data-informed decisions and have the necessary tools, insights, and support.
- Inform product and business strategy using data, identify opportunities for investment, and proactively suggest new directions.
- Set the internal narrative using data.
- Define key measurement frameworks by partnering with stakeholders to set business and product goals.
- Lead the development and championing of key metrics, ensuring proper instrumentation and monitoring.
- Create a data-obsessed organization.
- Develop a deep understanding of users by partnering with UXR and customer feedback teams to understand user needs.
Requirements
- 2+ years of experience managing data scientists and/or analytics engineers.
- 6+ years of overall experience in data science or analytics.
- Proven track record of shipping work that has directly influenced product and business decisions.
- Strong technical depth in experimentation, analytics, statistics, data modeling, and metric design.
- Ability to coach and set a high technical bar for senior individual contributors.
- Expertise in product or growth data science, including an expert-level understanding of user funnels (acquisition, activation, engagement, retention) in B2B or B2C products.
- Skilled at stakeholder management, comfortable partnering with senior leaders across Product, GTM, and Finance, and capable of pushing back when necessary.
- Proven experience influencing product roadmaps via data and insights.
- Proven ability to connect data work to business outcomes.
- Excellent data storytelling skills.
- An empathetic communicator who expresses nuanced ideas clearly for different audiences.
- Prioritizes curiosity and partnership.
- Experience growing teams, including hiring, coaching, and developing senior individual contributors.
