About the Role
Willis Re is building its global technology estate from the ground up, designed around data, analytics, and modern cloud platforms. This role will drive the implementation of the Snowflake data lake platform, focusing on hands-on development, data governance, quality assurance, and scaling.
Responsibilities
- Architect and build the Snowflake platform and its surrounding ecosystem, including ingestion, transformation, data models, curated data products, and warehouse design.
- Establish and maintain data tagging, classification, and cataloguing for discoverability and business meaning.
- Own platform governance, covering ownership, stewardship, lineage, access policies, retention, and data residency.
- Define and implement data quality controls, automated testing, monitoring, and reconciliation.
- Design the platform to handle growing data volumes, defining partitioning, clustering, storage tiering, retention, and archival strategies.
- Contribute to the data architecture, shaping target-state designs and feeding back real-world constraints.
- Direct and quality-assure the work of strategic delivery partners, reviewing designs and code.
- Set engineering standards for the team, covering CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Mentor engineers, raise the technical bar, and help shape the scaling of the data engineering function.
Requirements
- Proven track record in data engineering, including leading the delivery of a significant data platform end to end.
- Deep, current, hands-on Snowflake expertise, including architecture and ecosystem development.
- Strong track record establishing data governance in practice.
- Practical experience implementing data quality frameworks, automated testing, and monitoring.
- Deep expertise in data modelling and warehouse design.
- Proven experience running data platforms at high volume.
- Strong SQL and Python skills.
- Practical experience of pipeline orchestration, ELT tooling, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code on Azure.
- Sufficient architectural depth to shape and challenge platform design.
- Experience building to security and compliance requirements in regulated financial services.
- Experience leading or quality-assuring work delivered by vendors and partners.
- Ability to lead engineers and influence stakeholders.
- Ability to explain technical trade-offs clearly to both technical and business audiences.
