About the Role
The Finance Manager will provide leadership and oversight across CDI’s financial operations, accounting, reporting, compliance, and internal controls. This role is crucial for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial information and supporting informed decision-making to advance CDI's programs and priorities.
Responsibilities
- Oversee general ledger accounting and month-end, quarterly, and year-end close processes.
- Ensure financial statements and reports are accurate, timely, and complete.
- Maintain the integrity of financial information and meet reporting requirements.
- Lead budgeting and planning activities, monitor financial performance, and provide analysis.
- Coordinate the annual audit and preparation of audited financial statements.
- Oversee compliance with accounting standards, government requirements, funder obligations, and organizational policies.
- Strengthen internal controls, financial policies, and processes.
- Manage cash flow, reconciliations, banking relationships, investments, liquidity, tax remittances, and the corporate credit card program.
- Ensure day-to-day financial operations are well managed.
- Provide direction, coaching, training, and performance management to accounting staff.
- Foster collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning within the team.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen financial workflows, controls, reporting, and ways of working.
- Contribute to financial systems implementation and automation initiatives.
Requirements
- Comprehensive experience overseeing financial operations, including month-end and year-end close, audit preparation and management, budgeting and planning, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Understanding of Canadian accounting standards and the reporting and compliance requirements of a nonprofit organization with multiple government and other funding sources.
- Experience leading and developing an accounting or finance team.
- Ability to set clear expectations, manage competing priorities and deadlines, coach and support team members, and create an environment of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience working with financial and accounting systems.
- Experience supporting financial systems implementation, automation, or other process improvement initiatives.
- Ability to interpret complex financial information, identify trends and risks, and translate analysis into clear, practical recommendations.
- Comfort supporting budgeting, variance analysis, financial performance monitoring, and resource allocation decisions.
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly to individuals with varying levels of financial knowledge.
- Ability to build trusted relationships with program managers, senior leaders, auditors, funders, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Collaborative and solutions-focused approach to working across the organization.
- Comfort working in an environment with concurrent deadlines and changing priorities.
- Ability to stay organized and composed under pressure.
- Initiative to solve problems and identify opportunities for process improvement.
