About the Role
This role is for someone who wants to grow their creative skills and apply them to help shape high-quality, relevant, and impactful Canadian content within CBC's Scripted Content division. You will play a pivotal role in evaluating pitches, initiating new development projects, and managing series throughout the development cycle, while representing CBC’s creative interests to the independent production community.
Responsibilities
- Proactively source new development opportunities, including adaptations, IP, and talent across various genres and platforms.
- Evaluate pitches and development materials for creative strengths, relevance, series design, feasibility (producer, writers, cast, crew, budget), audience appeal, and cost factors.
- Negotiate creative changes with producers, editors, and story executives.
- Write constructive creative notes on pitches, scripts, and other documents, focusing on core story elements.
- Provide written coverage on pitches and scripts.
- Participate in committee meetings, planning meetings, festivals, and workshops.
- Represent the corporation on juries and panels.
- Give or participate in workshops for film schools and seminars.
- Stay informed about competing network television programming, Canadian talent, and cultural/broadcasting issues.
Requirements
- University degree or equivalent.
- 5 years of relevant experience (including internships, job shadowing, and learning spaces).
- Cultural awareness, sensitivity, and a connection to equity-seeking communities across Canada.
- High level of creativity with the ability to provide imaginative and effective suggestions on scripts.
- Keen eye for talent and ability to discover new projects and opportunities.
- Ability to source and package IP is a plus.
- Ability to read and absorb high volumes of material, view content, and provide feedback quickly.
- Ability to manage a large number of projects simultaneously.
- Understanding of screenwriting and post-production techniques.
- Knowledge of content and industry trends in Drama series programming, both in Canada and globally.
- Knowledge of Canadian creative personnel (screenwriters, comedians, actors, directors, producers, etc.).
- Knowledge of Network creative mandates and audience targets.
- Ability to speak effectively at meetings and public functions.
- Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of individuals.
- Ability to provide detailed and comprehensive written correspondence.
- Ability to maintain cordial and productive working relationships.
- Ability to represent the CBC courteously and informatively.
- Understanding of network business parameters, legal issues (e.g., copyright, sponsorship), and cost factors.
- Familiarity with Canadian television, digital, and film industries, including production companies, past series, CRTC guidelines, and funding mechanisms.
- Highly organized with the ability to prioritize tasks and provide clear information.
