About the Role
August allows law firms to compound their expertise by building an autonomous organization of AI agents that run the firm's knowledge work. We partner closely with our firms and grow alongside them through sharing revenue on our agents and equity in the firms we transform. We believe that in five years, more than 95% of legal work will be concentrated among a select few elite law firms. The firms that get there will be the ones that rebuild how they deliver it. We're partnering with those firms and building the engine they run on to become the biggest legal service provider in the world. We invest in partnerships, not just licenses. We sell finished legal work alongside our firms and take a share of what it earns. This enables them to scale their services and lets us grow along with it. That means we’re chasing the legal services market ($1T), which dwarfs the global legal tech market ($40b). The problem is hard. An engine of agents sits underneath every matter we touch, connected to every step of a lawyer's workflow, in an industry where there is no margin for error. We’re challenged with building the perfectly accurate, infallibly secure, and yet all-powerful engine for legal work. Responsibilities
- Own deployments end to end: Architect, build, and ship August into production at partner firms.
- Scope the integration, write the code, run the cutover, and stay on it until it holds.
- Build the integrations that touch everything: Ship the adapters, webhooks, and APIs that wire August into iManage, NetDocs, SharePoint, Outlook, and Word add-ins.
- Sit with the lawyers to learn how a matter actually moves before automating any part of it.
- Extract patterns from deployments, harden them into configurable modules, SDKs, and internal tooling.
- Debug live, in production, under pressure: Trace, root cause, and fix issues when migrations stall, policies block writes, or legacy systems return garbage.
- Instrument everything to prevent future issues.
- Embed with partner firms and build production-grade agents that perform legal work with expert-level reasoning.
- Turn what only shows up inside a real firm into core product.
- Define how this function works at August: the patterns, the tooling, and the team.
Requirements
- 1-2 years of production software engineering experience (full-stack or platform).
- Strong generalist who can navigate an unfamiliar codebase quickly, debug integration issues, and ship reliable code under real constraints.
- Strong command of TypeScript/JavaScript (React/Next.js) and at least one backend language (Python preferred).
- Comfortable writing API clients, data transformation scripts, and lightweight services from scratch.
- Engineering instincts that favor shipping: default to the smallest working solution, add observability from day one, and treat each deployment as a learning loop.
- Thrives in high-ownership, fast-moving environments: energized by ambiguity, can context-switch between deep technical problems and high-level architecture discussions, and takes pride in building things that work in the wild.
