About the Role
Serve the community of Salt Lake City by performing non-emergency, low-hazard duties, handling telephonic case reports, assisting with abandoned property, and responding to calls-for-service that do not require police officer authority. This role involves public interaction and data entry.
Responsibilities
- Assist with hiring, team scheduling, and provide training/mentoring to new employees.
- Perform specialized and technical non-emergency, low-hazard police duties including telephonic case reports, property reports, low-hazard property crimes, and other non-emergency response calls-for-service.
- Respond to calls independently or as part of a team, often without a police officer.
- Manage program inventory and maintenance requests for program equipment.
- Provide traffic control at various situations including hazardous conditions, accidents, crime scenes, fires, funerals, special events, and during power outages or weather-related incidents.
- Pick up and transport abandoned or found property.
- Dictate and/or write reports regarding investigations, evidence, or property collected.
- Book evidence or property into evidence.
- Receive information from citizens in person, by telephone, and in writing, ensuring proper distribution.
- Work closely with sworn personnel of the Salt Lake City Police Department.
- Follow proper emergency procedures for serious incidents and notify authorities when necessary.
- Act as a community advocate and communicate with diverse and multi-lingual community members.
- Assist Community Liaison Officers with nuisance properties investigations.
- Communicate effectively and persuasively with the public, management, and other City employees.
- Operate and maintain department-issued equipment and vehicle as assigned.
- Testify in court or at hearings regarding case records and investigative activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of application.
- Possession of CPR and AED certifications (or ability to obtain within six months after hire).
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of related public safety and law enforcement operations.
- Considerable human relations and communications skills.
- Must communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals from diverse organizations and backgrounds.
- Ability to work independently, make critical decisions, and use initiative and common sense.
- Must have valid state driver’s license or Utah driving privilege card (or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment).
- Ability to pass the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Civilian Response Training Program including classroom instruction, field work, and vehicle operations.
- One year of directly related experience (for Level II).
