About the Role
This position focuses on electrical, electronic, and system-wide engineering tasks for complex special machines and automated manufacturing systems. While PLC software development is handled by a dedicated team, this role is central to hardware-oriented automation design, system integration, machine safety, and commissioning. You will collaborate closely with colleagues from PLC, software, and mechanical development throughout the entire lifecycle, from concept to industrialization.
Responsibilities
- Definition of automation concepts, electrical architectures, and system designs for special machines
- Specification and integration of PLC-based control systems (preferably Beckhoff / TwinCAT) in collaboration with the PLC software team
- Development and integration of electrical hardware such as sensors, actuators, drives, robots, and laser systems
- Design and dimensioning of electrical power distribution and compressed air and vacuum supply systems
- Conducting machine safety analyses and risk assessments according to the Machinery Directive and CE conformity
- Commissioning and validation of machines in-house and at customer sites (national and international) together with interdisciplinary teams
- Error analysis, troubleshooting, and system-wide optimization of new and existing machines
- Application and integration of industrial communication systems (e.g., EtherCAT, Profinet)
- Development of quality inspection and measurement solutions using modern sensor technologies
- Transfer of developed systems into series-ready machines and series production
- Documentation of development, commissioning, and test results according to quality and regulatory requirements
- Close collaboration with mechanical, robotics, opto-mech, software, and project management teams
- Support for production in technical troubleshooting and fault resolution
Requirements
- Completed degree in electronics, electrical engineering, automation technology, or a comparable field
- Experience in automation and electrical engineering, ideally in special machine or plant construction
- Practical knowledge of PLC-based control systems (Beckhoff / TwinCAT advantageous), without primary responsibility for PLC software development
- Knowledge of drive technology, industrial automation, and fieldbus systems
- Experience with machine safety, risk assessments, and CE conformity
- Experience with tools such as EPLAN, Altium, LTSpice, or comparable systems is advantageous
- Structured, analytical, and independent way of working with a strong hands-on mentality
- Willingness to quickly familiarize yourself with new technologies and tasks
- Very good German language skills (written and spoken) are required; English skills are advantageous
