About the Role
This position is responsible for the safety, health, and well-being of the Ulster County Community College campus community. It provides administrative, supervisory, and hands-on responsibility for safety and security, acting as a Peace Officer.
Responsibilities
- Assists the Director of Public Safety and Health Services in implementing community policing systems that promote safety on campus.
- Administers policies and procedures that build trust and positive relationships with students and employees.
- Assists the Director of Public Safety and Health Services in preparing and updating plans for emergency, disaster, or security incidents.
- Assists the Director of Public Safety and Health Services in developing Standard Operating Procedures.
- Assists in the development of emergency response procedures through advisement and participation in designated committees.
- Responds to incidents, including extreme acts of violence, and takes appropriate actions to ensure safety.
- Patrols campus buildings and grounds for disturbances, violations, or fire hazards.
- Prevents disruptive actions and/or criminal activities.
- Establishes effective working relationships with local public law enforcement agencies.
- Quells disturbances using tact, good judgment, and appropriate force.
- May possess and carry a firearm if licensed and authorized.
- Coordinates security activities to maintain control over College property.
- Executes policies established by the President and Board of Trustees regarding campus order.
- Trains, schedules, and supervises Campus Public Safety and Health Service personnel.
- Works collaboratively with state and local public law enforcement agencies.
- May administer emergency first aid.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Public Safety and Health Services.
Requirements
- Minimum of four (4) years’ experience as a sworn Police Officer or Peace Officer with supervisory rank, or commensurate military experience (minimum grade E6 with honorable discharge).
- Must obtain certification as a NYS Community College Peace Officer within one (1) year of appointment.
- No misdemeanor or felony convictions in any jurisdiction.
- Must possess a valid NYS Driver’s License and a driving record qualifying for operating a college vehicle.
- Must be licensed to possess and carry a handgun in New York State.
- Must be in sufficient physical condition to meet assignment demands.
- Experience handling critical incidents demonstrated by past employment and training in law enforcement, military service, or other public safety professions.
