About the Role

The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) performs on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks. This role is responsible for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication, and various types of On Track Safety in controlled and non-controlled track areas.

Responsibilities

  • Provide jobsite protection consistent with rules, including radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers.
  • Ensure work groups are clear of limits during train movements.
  • Grant permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits.
  • Perform daily job briefings with all personnel and ensure adherence to safety requirements.
  • Prepare and submit required electronic forms, including job setup forms, daily work reports, and invoices.
  • Handle and place signs, derails, and other equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds.
  • Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training.
  • Maintain high-level communication with supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and respectful workplace culture.
  • Uphold the organization’s standards of integrity, accountability, and respect.
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required to meet business needs.

Requirements

  • Able to complete required physical demands and/or task.
  • Able to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains.
  • Understand the on-track safety training and qualification required of roadway workers.
  • Proficient in radio procedures for communication between RWIC/EIC’s and assigned work groups.
  • Proficient in performing a job briefing with all roadway workers.
  • Able to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
  • Able to install a railroad derail and apply locking device.
  • Proficiency with electronic communications including email and text, and standard office applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • 20 years of experience with the last position held as a supervisor track inspection (STI), assistant track supervisor (ATS), Foreman, or higher, OR 20 years of experience as a RWIC while employed by a Class I or Class II freight railroad.
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful outcome of pre-employment and recurring background checks, and drug and alcohol testing, as well as classroom and field training, including assessments.
  • Successful completion of all onboarding and recurring training requirements is mandatory for continued employment.
