About the Role

The Paralegal with the Brooklyn-PAH Program will support staff attorneys in legal and administrative functions, including client communication, case support, drafting pleadings, case filing, administrative investigations, records management, data tracking, and answering phone calls.

Responsibilities

  • Research cases and legal issues to support client cases and prepare documentation.
  • Interview clients, enter cases into the case management system, and prepare client case documents.
  • Communicate legal details to clients clearly and precisely in an attorney's absence.
  • Transcribe notes from legal proceedings and meetings with precise terminology and speed.
  • Research, retrieve, and update client case files in both hard copy and the case management system.
  • Coordinate deposition schedules with other law firms and respond to inquiries regarding court details.
  • Facilitate the timely delivery of legal documents and attend court and administrative hearings.
  • Respond to clients in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintain an updated and accurate master calendar for the team.
  • Attend community group meetings, outreach programs, and client meetings, which may involve evenings and weekends.
  • Perform general administrative duties and other assigned tasks.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (preferred) and a minimum of one year legal assistant/paralegal experience.
  • Paralegal certificate is a plus.
  • Experience with court rules, filing court documents, and maintaining litigation files.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals, organizations, and people in crisis.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with clients/tenants of different races, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations in a multicultural environment.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent writing skills in English; bilingual Spanish is preferred.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and other standard data management systems.
  • Related certifications are a plus.
  • Strong reporting and record-keeping skills, including the ability to synthesize data into clear language, charts, and checklists.
  • Ability to work strategically within a team and independently, multi-task, and work under tight deadlines.
  • Dependability, good time management, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
