About the Role

The Bronx Community Justice Center (BxCJC) is seeking a Violence Interrupter Supervisor to prevent neighborhood shootings and killings through community-driven safety initiatives, violence prevention, youth opportunity, and economic development efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of Violence Interrupters in Morrisania, Bronx
  • Create canvassing schedules and ensure staff presence in the neighborhood
  • Ensure all data and documentation is completed by staff
  • Intervene in circumstances where gun violence is likely, including possible retaliation
  • Identify and assist youth at-risk for involvement in violent activities
  • Learn about the causes of shootings/killings to mediate situations and prevent retaliation
  • Build relationships with high-risk individuals and those who know them
  • Conduct outreach to build strong relationships with youth, residents, businesses, and community groups
  • Talk to residents about potential conflicts and assist in preventing them
  • Organize responses to shootings and increase visibility when shootings/killings take place
  • Work with community partners to identify and diffuse "hot spots" for shootings and violence
  • Report to the S.O.S. Bronx Violence Interrupter Supervisor and Program Manager and keep them informed of all relevant community activities
  • Maintain documentation of all contacts with high-risk individuals
  • Ensure that all documentation is completed by staff for shootings and other acts of violence that are prevented
  • Manage responses to shootings in other communities, when necessary
  • Distribute public education materials to targeted audiences
  • Distribute information about community events and important resources
  • Attend, participate and complete all program trainings
  • Attend and help facilitate community events and shooting responses
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and other team meetings, as required
  • Attend and participate in all Bronx Community Justice Center trainings, meetings, workshops and conferences as required and assigned by supervisors
  • Facilitate workshops and make presentations at schools and secure detention centers as needed
  • Communicate with Supervisor and Team effectively
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Individuals who are formerly incarcerated or have other experience in the criminal justice system are particularly invited to apply
  • Associates (or higher) with a minimum of 3-4 years of relevant experience required
  • In-depth knowledge and familiarity of the South Bronx Mott Haven and Morrisania, with particular focus on Mott Haven: Adams, St. Mary’s, Moore and Betances Houses, Morrisania: Forest and McKinley is highly preferred
  • Familiarity with the South Bronx area preferred
  • Experience and knowledge of at-risk youth and gang involvement, with a commitment to stopping violence and working towards positive community change
  • Knowledge of street sets, crews, gangs and or groups
  • Ability to communicate with and build positive relationships with high-risk youth
  • Comfort managing a large number of diverse tasks
  • Able to walk 30 blocks or more on a regular basis
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to use a computer and Microsoft Office required
  • Strong team skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of application and throughout the duration of employment

  • $56,500 - $67,500 per year
