About the Role

The Medical Respite program provides a safe haven for individuals experiencing homelessness to recover from medical conditions. Participants can focus on health while also addressing needs like housing and benefits. The Respite Community Assistant ensures the safety, comfort, and well-being of residents by supporting operations, assisting with intake, monitoring residents, maintaining cleanliness, and resolving conflicts. This role is part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering client-centered, trauma-informed services.

Responsibilities

Foster a community of safety, inclusion, and healing aligned with National Institute for Medical Respite Care standards.
Greet and assist residents in a friendly, professional manner, ensuring a welcoming and safe environment.
Identify available beds for incoming residents and provide them with necessary items for comfort.
Perform logistics for settling residents into rooms, including facility tours and unpacking assistance.
Educate residents on respite community expectations, policies, and conduct.
Support shelter operations, ensuring safety and security of residents, staff, and property.
Assist in coordinating meals and laundry services, completing daily rounds to monitor resident needs.
Escort residents throughout the respite community and building as needed.
Regulate the amount of personal belongings residents bring into their assigned rooms.
Collect and properly label resident laundry, ensuring proper storage upon return.
Assist with meals according to food handling procedures.
Perform hourly rounds to monitor residents’ physical and emotional well-being and respond to incidents.
Assist with managing interpersonal conflicts and challenges between residents.
Distribute clean laundry to residents upon its return.
Receive clean linens, verify proper storage, and ensure items are kept organized.
Monitor common areas, ensuring a safe and respectful environment.
Assist with packing and preparing residents for discharge, ensuring all personal belongings are gathered.
Support bed turnover procedures, ensuring rooms are cleaned and prepared for the next resident.
Collaborate with the Shelter Community Manager and team members for smooth daily operations.
Perform other duties as needed to support respite community operations or special projects.

Requirements

Ability to assess situations quickly and provide solutions, especially in emergencies.
Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change.
Ability to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently.
Familiarity with shelter policies, safety protocols, and compliance with regulations like HIPAA.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association is required.
Crisis Intervention Certification required within 30 days of employment.
Food Handling Certification required within 30 days of employment.

Experience Level

2 or more years direct service experience in an emergency shelter or homeless services management.
Previous experience working with vulnerable populations (e.g., homeless, elderly, individuals experiencing mental health or substance use issues) is highly preferred.
