About the Role

The Optical Fabricator is responsible for operating CNC and conventional centering equipment to machine precision optical components to specification. This role supports the production of optical components requiring consistent attention to detail, strong mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work within tight tolerances. The position involves machine operation, in-process inspection, basic process adjustments, and maintaining production quality standards within a precision manufacturing environment. Training will be provided for the right candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC and conventional centering machines.
  • Develop, run, and adjust CNC programs based on drawings, specifications, and machining parameters.
  • Center optical components to print, maintaining dimensional accuracy and concentricity requirements.
  • Monitor machine performance and make real-time adjustments to maintain process control.
  • Perform in-process and final inspection using appropriate metrology tools.
  • Verify component geometry, alignment, and surface condition in accordance with specifications.
  • Identify and isolate nonconforming material and coordinate with quality and engineering.
  • Document production and inspection results in accordance with internal procedures.
  • Support process development, tooling setup, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Maintain equipment, tooling, and work area in proper operating condition.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience working in manufacturing, machining, assembly, or other hands-on technical environments involving precision work, mechanical processes, or detailed inspection activities.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to learn CNC and conventional machining processes within a precision manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions, technical drawings, specifications, and documented procedures.
  • Comfortable using basic measurement and inspection tools such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, or comparators.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain consistent quality and follow established processes.
  • Ability to identify process issues, communicate concerns, and work effectively with production, quality, and engineering teams.
  • Prior experience with optical fabrication, centering operations, CNC machining, or precision machining equipment is beneficial but not required.
  • Exposure to Lean Manufacturing or continuous improvement environments is a plus.
