About the Role

Erie and Niagara is seeking a Senior Claims Adjuster to analyze information, evaluate claims, determine coverage, assess loss or liability, and settle claims within prescribed limits. This role requires independent judgment and operates under general supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for claim setup, including taking loss reports, establishing claim files, obtaining policy information, and determining applicable coverage.
  • Establish and monitor adequate reserves within the scope of authority.
  • Determine settlement value of losses and negotiate claim settlements within the scope of authority.
  • Assist in providing guidance to staff for prompt claim settlement and disposition.
  • Prepare denial materials, including documentation and communication to affected parties.
  • Input claim information into computer systems.
  • Clearly and concisely document all relevant activity on assigned files and recommend further action.
  • Effectively communicate and build rapport with insureds, claimants, physicians, adjusters, attorneys, witnesses, and underwriters to gather information for timely decisions.
  • Seek subrogation from responsible parties when applicable.
  • Become knowledgeable on current reinsurance contracts and interact regarding recoveries.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge of insurance regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Stay abreast of marketplace trends and changes, making recommendations accordingly.
  • Audit and approve claims-related expenses within the level of authority and escalate expenses outside authority to the Claim Manager.
  • May assist in training departmental employees.
  • Provide claims-related support to Underwriting Departments.
  • May be required to testify in court proceedings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Claims Manager.

Requirements

  • 7 years of claims-related experience is preferred.
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of coverage and applicable decisional and legislative laws related to claims handling in New York State.
  • Proficient Computer Skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook applications.
  • Must work well both independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy.
  • Exercises good judgment when corresponding with agents, insureds, and claimants.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
