About the Role
Board Members are responsible for ensuring the academic program's success, adherence to the charter, and the school's financial viability. Actions must align with the mission, vision, and core values.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic oversight by adopting and upholding the school's mission and vision.
- Oversee school operations, delegating day-to-day authority to the school administration.
- Ensure financial viability by overseeing the school's financial condition.
- Approve all employment compensation and benefits through the annual budget.
- Approve all major contracts in consultation with Pharos Academy.
- Utilize individual skills, knowledge, and expertise to support the school.
- Act as advocates and representatives of the school in community and stakeholder relations.
- Actively prepare for, engage in, and attend monthly meetings, missing no more than two per year.
- Notify the Board Chair if unable to attend a meeting.
- Participate on at least one subcommittee of the Board.
- Work cooperatively with fellow Trustees to complete Board tasks efficiently.
- Contribute to the effective operation of the Board and school success by focusing on the best interests of the Board and school.
- Maintain objectivity in all deliberations.
- Support all Board decisions after they are made.
- Participate in honest evaluations of personal and Board performance.
- Commit approximately 8 hours per month to board service, including meetings, committee work, and preparation.
- Attend events at the schools, assist with fundraising, and perform other ambassador tasks as needed.
- Attend Board training workshops.
- Provide advice and technical assistance in individual areas of expertise.
- Act as an advocate and representative of the school to families, the community, governmental bodies, and financial supporters.

- Must have a shared vision for the school and the steps to realize it.
- Must expect that all children can and will achieve high levels of academic success.
- Must believe in Pharos Academy's school design and curriculum.
- Must understand the promises within the school's charter.
- Must understand the distinction between roles and responsibilities of involved parties.
- Must be willing to volunteer for one or more Board committees.
- Must have the ability to contribute appropriate time and energy to assigned tasks.
- Must be results-oriented and able to work within a team structure.
- Must have specific knowledge, experience, and/or interest in at least one element of school governance.
- Must be committed to a partnership based on mutual trust and respect among the Board, the executive director, and Pharos Academy.
