About the Role
This role is for an experienced senior lawyer to join as Senior Legal Counsel on a 12-month fixed-term contract as maternity cover, providing legal advice across corporate and strategic projects at Standard Life. Working within the Corporate and Investments Legal team, you will offer pragmatic, commercially focused advice to senior stakeholders and colleagues, manage complex legal matters autonomously, and effectively utilize external counsel when specialist support is needed. This position allows for the application and enhancement of legal expertise while contributing to key corporate and strategic projects.
Responsibilities
- Provide pragmatic, commercially focused advice to senior stakeholders and colleagues across the business.
- Take ownership of complex legal matters.
- Work with a high degree of autonomy.
- Use external counsel effectively where specialist support is required.
- Advise on and negotiate investment services agreements.
- Advise on investment-related commercial contracts.
- Identify and manage key legal and commercial risks.
- Manage external counsel to deliver cost-effective, business-aligned advice on complex or specialist matters.
- Build relationships and manage stakeholders effectively.
- Collaborate effectively across General Counsel, senior stakeholders, and external suppliers.
Requirements
- Qualified lawyer with experience gained in-house or in private practice.
- Strong technical expertise.
- Sound legal judgment.
- Ability to advise with confidence on complex matters.
- Background in financial services is helpful.
- Understanding of asset management operations, asset classes, and investment vehicles is helpful.
- Excellent legal drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills.
- Ability to provide clear, practical, and commercially focused advice on complex matters.
- Significant experience advising on and negotiating investment services agreements.
- Experience advising on investment-related commercial contracts.
- Experience managing external counsel.
- Excellent relationship-building and stakeholder management skills.
- Confidence to collaborate effectively across General Counsel, senior stakeholders, and external suppliers.
