About the Role
The Bereavement Officer participates in the efficient and effective running of crematoria and cemeteries, managing administration and reception duties with professionalism, empathy, and compassion. This role positively supports the community in times of need.
Responsibilities
- Ensure accurate review and processing of statutory and non-statutory paperwork for cremations, burials, and memorial contracts using in-house database, Microsoft 365, and manual processes.
- Assist the Finance department with basic finance procedures, utilizing MS Excel and Sage Intacct.
- Ensure timely and efficient administration for the sale of memorialization, including fee calculation, supplier orders, and memorial installation coordination.
- Accurately input and process all financial information for cremation, burial, and memorial bookings using the bereavement software system for timely invoicing.
- Act as the point of contact for general inquiries and complaints, ensuring good customer service, sensitive resolution, and appropriate escalation.
- Assist colleagues with other business areas, including chapel attending and various interments.
- Participate in community events and company initiatives.
- Undertake any other reasonable tasks within the scope of the role and grade.
- Play an active role in the successful delivery of company events, including open days and charity activities.
Requirements
- Experience working with IT systems including Windows, web applications, Office 365, Teams, and Outlook.
- Experience with Sage Intacct.
- High level of resilience, emotional stability, and maturity.
- Commitment to achieving and maintaining standards of excellence.
- Experience delivering administrative support in a busy, front-facing, and highly pressurized office environment.
- Effective interactive communication skills, with the ability to handle difficult and sensitive situations professionally and calmly.
- Excellent English language proficiency, both written and oral, with the ability to present information clearly and concisely.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately and maintain confidentiality in compliance with GDPR requirements.
- Attention to detail and a methodical approach to work, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
- Ability to work as an effective team player, assisting and supporting other team members.
- Respect for diversity and an inclusive approach with everyone.
- Demonstrates high standards of personal conduct, honesty, and integrity.
- Ability to travel and work at various satellite locations across Wandsworth and potentially North East Surrey Crematorium.
- Ability to prioritize tasks according to need and urgency.
- Willingness to undertake fire marshal training and execute related duties if required.
- Willingness to undertake first aid in the workplace training and provide first aid post-training.
- Maintain a smart appearance and wear provided uniform when required.
- Full UK driving license.
- Experience working within the bereavement industry or a similar environment (e.g., care) is desirable.
- Qualification to cremate or willingness to work towards it is desirable.
- Experience of chapel and burial duties is desirable.
