About the Role

This role is responsible for maintaining, servicing, and repairing substation plant and equipment across London Underground's High Voltage Power Distribution Network. The goal is to ensure assets are maintained to meet safety and operational criteria, providing efficient and continuous power supplies. The role involves an equal split of electrical and mechanical disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, service, repair, disassemble, re-build, and re-calibrate all substation plant, including High Voltage, Low Voltage, and DC switchgear, Signalling systems, Frequency Changers, batteries & chargers, Rectifiers, Transformers, rotating plant, Power Quality equipment (SVCs and Harmonic filters), Off Line Battery Inverters (OLBI), and all other substation equipment.
• Diagnose and eliminate electrical and mechanical faults on all substation plant, wiring, and control systems.
• Utilize technical documents, manuals, diagrams, and drawings for plant and systems.
• Act as Site Person in Charge (SPIC) for both HV Power and 3rd party works as required.
• Declare substation plant fit or unfit for service and follow instructions for operating plant equipment.
• Perform advanced condition monitoring techniques, including thermal imaging, trip profiling, DC DAOL testing, Ductoring, and IR testing.
• Undertake lifting, slinging, and rigging operations for heavy plant and equipment.
• Prepare and submit reports on faults and plant breakdowns attended.
• Drive company vehicles, maintain their cleanliness, and perform required vehicle checks.

Requirements

• Completed an indentured or modern apprenticeship in Power, Electrical, or Mechanical roles.
• Possess an Electrical, Mechanical, or Power Engineering technical qualification or equivalent.
• Proficient in the use of electrical test equipment to determine plant and equipment condition.
• Have relevant electrical or mechanical experience (fitting skills).
• Ability to understand technical drawings.
• Hold a full clean driving license.
• Sound electrical knowledge of DC battery supplies, three-phase AC electrical supplies, transformer principles, the fundamentals of circuit protection, and earthing arrangements is desired.
• Must have completed an indentured or modern apprenticeship in a Power, Electrical, or Mechanical role.
• Time served in a Power, Electrical, or Mechanical environment is a requirement.
• Fitters must demonstrate mechanical skills and a sound knowledge of batteries and chargers, standby power supplies, three-phase AC electrical supplies, transformer principles, AC & DC switchgear operation, and the fundamentals of circuit protection and earthing arrangements.
• Must pass a Low Voltage Assessment during the probationary period, consisting of a written exam and a practical safety-critical assessment.
• Must renew their license every three years through reassessment, supported by HV Power's competency and capability policies.

• Candidates must be able to demonstrate their right to work in the UK.

• This job is Safety Critical; successful candidates will be subject to pre-employment drugs and alcohol testing and ongoing random testing in compliance with LU Standards.
