About the Role
The Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) is critical in helping NESO navigate the complexities of the energy transition towards Net Zero by providing expert economic analytical capability and insight. As an Economic Analyst, you will support economic analysis across various areas of NESO, considering economic welfare, macroeconomic factors, trends, regulatory and market economics, and consumer behaviour. You will also analyze and forecast economic costs within the evolving energy landscape to facilitate informed decision-making for an economically sound energy market transition.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to projects within the Office of the Chief Economist, providing economic analysis and modelling on energy sector topics, including cost-benefit analysis, market trends and forecasts, policy evaluation, and impact assessments.
- Investigate economic drivers and outcomes of decarbonisation, considering economic welfare, macroeconomic factors, economic trends, regulatory and market economics, and consumer behaviour influences.
- Conduct literature reviews, data gathering, and analysis, and contribute to the development of economic methodologies for research projects.
- Proactively take the lead on completing tasks and lead analysis work, collaborating with stakeholders across NESO.
- Attend conferences, webinars, and research events to stay updated on industry insights, economic analysis, and emerging policies.
- Conduct economic analysis across different energy industry sectors (heating, transport, generation), identifying and quantifying economic factors behind net zero targets and policies.
- Apply whole system thinking to draw conclusions from economic analyses and insights, communicating them clearly and succinctly.
- Assist in preparing briefing notes and submissions for ministers or economic reports for executives.
- Participate in the development, content creation, and maintenance of an internal knowledge-sharing platform for economic insights, research findings, and best practices.
Requirements
- Must have the right to work in the UK by the start of employment.
- Curious and forward thinking with an interest in the broader energy landscape and a proactive approach to learning.
- Ability to conduct desktop research and analyze data from a broad range of sources (macroeconomics, industry trends, energy supply/demand data, economic trends).
- Strong numeracy and numerical analysis skills.
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex topics simply.
- Ability to build relationships with employees at all levels and operate effectively within a team.
- Willingness to learn and gain exposure to internal and external stakeholders.
- Enjoy solving analytical and empirical problems with a focus on data-related challenges and solutions.
- Capability across the MS Office suite, particularly MS Excel.
- Knowledge of macroeconomics, microeconomics, applied economics, market economics, regulatory economics, econometrics, and/or behavioural economics.
- Awareness of the GB whole energy system, its structure, key stakeholders, and their interactions.
- Experience in drawing economic insights from data, conducting economic forecasting and/or economic impact analysis (e.g., cost-benefit analysis).
- Experience working collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
- Willingness to engage with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong working knowledge of Excel.
- Broad understanding of the GB energy sector.
- Experience of carrying out research or analysis in a workplace environment.
