About the Role
The Daily Mail seeks an enthusiastic Data Journalist for its award-winning Deep Dive team in London. This role involves producing data-led stories and interactive tools for a global digital-first department focused on data, graphics, interactive development, and visual storytelling. The team is collaborative and aims to make data journalism accessible and popular. You will work in an AI-assisted environment, verifying and approving all final content.
Responsibilities
- Research and source datasets, file FOIs, and analyze data.
- Ensure all published statistics are accurate and adhere to editorial standards.
- Contribute to larger projects by completing defined tasks such as data cleaning, analysis, and chart building.
- Collaborate with designers and developers to prototype interactive tools and graphics.
- Liaise with newsroom specialists and champion work across the department.
Requirements
- Practical experience in data journalism or a related field (quantitative research, data communications, data analytics).
- Strong data wrangling skills in Excel and ideally Python (or similar).
- Ability to learn quickly and independently.
- Proficiency with percentages, rates, and averages, with a critical eye for data.
- Understanding of data visualisation and UX principles.
- Familiarity with modern data visualisation tools.
- A portfolio of trusted data sources is a bonus.
- Cartography, spatial analysis, and demonstrable QGIS or equivalent skills are a bonus.
- Confidence on camera and an interest in presenting short-form video are desirable but not essential.
- Passion for news, organization, reliability, ability to work under pressure, curiosity, adaptability, and creativity.
