About the Role
The Daily Mail seeks a Senior Data Journalist for its Deep Dive team in London. This role involves producing data-led stories and interactive tools, working from ideation to publication on diverse topics. The position operates in an AI-assisted environment where AI aids processes, but human oversight is crucial for final output.
Responsibilities
- Produce "must-read" data-led stories and interactive tools.
- Work with the Data Editor and Deep Dive colleagues on projects from ideation to publication.
- Cover everyday topics such as health, personal finance, weather, and crime.
- Engage in news-led data coverage for events like the World Cup and election results.
- Build and maintain personalized data pages and interactives for evergreen and trending news.
- Coordinate cross-functional teams including designers, developers, and writers.
- Develop reusable, verifiable algorithms for interactive storytelling.
- Find, scrape, FOI, or build datasets for flagship data stories.
- Ensure all statistics are accurate and adhere to editorial standards.
- Structure, write, and debug analysis, even with AI-assisted research.
- Prototype and implement compelling tools, visual stories, and graphics in collaboration with design and development teams.
- Partner with the wider newsroom and liaise with specialists.
- Champion work across the newsroom.
Requirements
- Significant practical experience in data journalism or a related field (quantitative academic research, data communications, data analytics).
- Experience in a national newsroom is ideal.
- A track record of owning projects from start to finish.
- Experience coordinating cross-functional teams (designers, developers, writers, editors, post-production).
- Strong data wrangling skills in Python (or R) and Excel.
- Sound data verification judgment, transparency, and adherence to internal processes and style guides.
- In-depth understanding of data visualization and UX principles.
- Familiarity with modern data visualization tools.
- A portfolio of trusted data sources is desirable.
- Cartography, spatial analysis, and demonstrable QGIS or equivalent are a bonus.
- Experience mentoring junior colleagues is desirable.
- Reviewing others' methodology is desirable.
- Confidence on camera and an interest in presenting short-form video are desirable but not essential.
- A nose for news.
- Excellent writing skills.
- Ability to operate under pressure.
- Self-motivated, curious, adaptable, and full of ideas.
