About the Role

Lead Software Engineering across Pet Circle, focusing on web and mobile experiences, integrations, supply chain, and fulfillment systems. This role involves bringing structure, technical discipline, and predictability to a fast-growing engineering organization while maintaining pace and adaptability. You will set technical and architectural direction, lead a distributed engineering team, and partner with Product, UX, and the wider business to achieve commercial goals. As part of the Senior Leadership Group, you will also shape strategy and influence key business decisions.

Responsibilities

Bring structure to a fast-growing engineering team, introducing appropriate processes to improve delivery, quality, and reliability without unnecessary bureaucracy.
Set technical and architectural direction across web, mobile, integrations, supply chain, and fulfillment.
Own platform performance, scalability, security, and technical debt, implementing rigorous approaches to testing, observability, incident response, and engineering quality.
Lead, stabilize, and grow a distributed engineering team across Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines, fostering a culture of high performance, collaboration, and psychological safety.
Make engineering performance measurable by defining and using key metrics for throughput, quality, and reliability.
Contribute to architecture discussions, code reviews, prototyping, and problem-solving, and introduce modern engineering approaches like AI-assisted development.
Partner closely with Product, UX, and business stakeholders, managing engineering investment, platform costs, and customer-impacting failures with commercial discipline.

Requirements

Led and grown engineering teams of 10+ people, including distributed or remote teams.
Experience stabilizing teams, navigating conflict, and retaining strong people.
Delivered high-performance, high-traffic consumer web and mobile products.
Owned platform performance, scalability, and security at scale.
Worked in both high-growth/startup environments and more mature organizations.
Current, hands-on technical depth across backend, web, mobile, CI/CD, and cloud architecture (ideally AWS or Google Cloud).
Demonstrated current, hands-on technical curiosity through prototypes, side projects, or experimentation with new technologies.
Experience using AI pragmatically where it adds genuine value.
Strong commercial judgment, including experience managing engineering budgets or platform costs and balancing technical investment against business value.
Influential cross-functional partner capable of bringing people through change and communicating clearly.
Ability to keep engineering connected to the customer experience.
