About the Role

Normal Computing is seeking exceptional researchers and engineers for its AI Research Residency, focused on the frontier of agentic AI. This program offers a dedicated research mentor, direct access to the team building our agentic code generation platform, and a clear path from onboarding to publication. Residents will contribute to foundational hardware and software for the semiconductor industry and critical AI infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Develop multi-agent and RL strategies for agentic code generation and tool use, turning them into research prototypes integrated with our code generation platform.
  • Build comprehensive evaluation suites, including task specifications, benchmarks, and performance dashboards, to assess system performance.
  • Source and curate datasets from technical documents and other materials, and generate synthetic data as needed.
  • Scope, run, and iterate on original technical investigations in partnership with researchers and engineers, including rigorous experimental analysis and documentation.
  • Co-author research papers for submission to relevant venues, with mentorship on framing, experiments, and technical writing.
  • Present work and findings to the Normal Computing research community at the residency colloquium.
  • Experience startup pace firsthand by working directly with founders, senior researchers, and engineers in a lean, fast-moving environment.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a graduate degree (MS or PhD, or equivalent research experience) in computer science, AI, machine learning, or a related field.
  • Strong Python skills and proficiency with modern ML frameworks (PyTorch preferred).
  • Familiarity with agentic LLM concepts, including multi-agent systems, tool use, reinforcement learning variants, constrained decoding, and program synthesis.
  • Experience turning a research idea into working, reasonably reproducible code.
  • Comfort with, or eagerness to learn, the practical side of research: acquiring and curating datasets, considering licensing and provenance, and building evaluation frameworks for sequential or agentic tasks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A bias toward ownership and self-direction, with comfort in ambiguity and speed of a small, fast-moving startup.
