About the Role

Upward Bound Tutors work individually and with small groups of UB high school students to assist with their studies in Math, Science, and English/Writing. Tutors help students understand course material, prepare for assignments and exams, and develop effective study strategies to foster academic success and readiness for postsecondary education.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and small-group tutoring to TRIO Upward Bound students in designated academic areas and during scheduled tutoring sessions.
  • Serve as an academic resource by assisting students with understanding course concepts, applying academic skills, completing assignments, and developing effective study and learning strategies.
  • Establish positive and supportive relationships with Upward Bound students and serve as a mentor and positive role model.
  • Communicate with Upward Bound program staff regarding student participation, academic progress, challenges, and opportunities for additional support.
  • Assist with and/or chaperone Upward Bound educational activities, field trips, campus visits, and other program events as assigned.
  • Assist with quarterly study sessions, student orientations, parent/family orientations, and other program activities designed to support student engagement and academic success.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of TRIO Upward Bound program goals and objectives.

Requirements

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment.
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard (High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program; Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term; Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term; Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term; Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term).
  • Must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified.
  • Incumbents are required to self-report convictions.
  • Those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 2 years.
  • OSU will conduct a review of the National Sex Offender Public website prior to hire.
