About the Role

Relay is seeking a leader to own Compliance Strategy and Operations end-to-end, including AML, sanctions, KYB/CDD, regulatory change, and monitoring. This is a build role focused on creating a modern compliance function from the ground up, enabling safe scaling, new product launches, and operational efficiency through data, design, and automation.

Responsibilities

  • Build and own Relay's compliance program end-to-end — AML, sanctions, KYB/CDD, and regulatory compliance — including policies, procedures, risk assessments, and controls.
  • Be accountable for program effectiveness — investigations and suspicious activity governance, escalation paths, issue management through to validated remediation, and internal standards.
  • Own the compliance relationship with our sponsor bank — day-to-day partnership, exam and audit readiness, issue resolution, product approvals, and management information reporting.
  • Design the monitoring, testing, and reporting infrastructure to prove control effectiveness with data.
  • Set the strategy for transaction monitoring, investigation, and suspicious activity reporting.
  • Implement continuous re-verification for KYB and customer diligence, focusing on synthetic business identity.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Risk, and Operations to embed compliance requirements into new products and features.
  • Track the regulatory landscape and translate change into concrete updates to controls and roadmap.
  • Hire, coach, and grow the Compliance pillar across strategy and operations.
  • Implement AI and automation in compliance operations to scale capacity with volume.
  • Run the pillar on a paired scorecard measuring risk outcomes and customer friction.
  • Provide clear, periodic reporting to senior management and the board on program health, emerging risk, and issue remediation.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of compliance experience in fintech, banking, or payments, including time leading a compliance function or a major pillar of one.
  • Experience building compliance programs, policies, and control frameworks from the ground up.
  • Experience owning a program's effectiveness personally.
  • Experience managing a sponsor bank, regulator, or examiner relationship directly.
  • Comfortable defining metrics that prove a control works.
  • Technically fluent enough to reason about monitoring systems, decisioning platforms, and data pipelines.
  • Experience hiring, coaching, and growing compliance talent.
  • Belief that compliance enables growth and ability to find paths to 'yes'.
  • Strong communication skills across all levels.
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments, tackle ambiguity, build process, and raise the bar.
  • Actively using AI tools in current work and excitement to push possibilities with them.
