Responsibilities
- Provide peer counseling and support to validate clients' experiences and encourage them to take responsibility for their recovery.
- Serve as a mentor to clients, promoting hope and empowerment.
- Act as an interpreter to help team members understand clients' subjective experiences.
- Provide expertise from a recovering consumer's perspective to the team regarding clients' experiences with substance use disorder, medications, treatment, and recovery.
- Collaborate with the team to foster a culture that respects client viewpoints and maximizes self-determination in treatment planning.
- Help clients identify, understand, and combat stigma and discrimination related to substance use disorder and reduce self-stigma.
- Help team members identify and understand culture-wide stigma against people with substance use disorder and develop strategies to eliminate it within the team.
- Ensure the protection of clients' rights and improve their knowledge of client rights and grievance procedures.
- Help clients learn about grievance procedures and support them with filing, mediating, and resolving complaints.
- Increase awareness of and support client participation in consumer self-help programs and advocacy organizations.
- Serve as the liaison between the team and consumer-run programs.
- Share duties in the provision of treatment and recovery services.
- Assist in assessing clients' substance use symptoms and response to treatment, suggesting treatment plan changes for at-risk clients.
- Assist in providing direct clinical services (individual, group, family) to teach symptom-management techniques and promote personal growth.
- Assist in providing individual and group treatment using a stage-based, non-confrontational model with client-determined goals.
- Share duties in the provision of rehabilitation services.
- Perform mentoring, problem-solving, encouragement, and support on and off the job site.
- Provide work-related supportive services, including assistance with clothing, grooming, wake-up calls, and transportation.
- Provide assessment, problem-solving, side-by-side services, skill teaching, support, and environmental adaptations for activities of daily living.
- Assist clients in finding and maintaining safe and affordable housing, including apartment hunting, roommate negotiation, and securing necessities.
- Assist and support clients with household activities, including cleaning and laundry.
- Assist and support clients with personal hygiene and grooming.
- Provide nutrition education and assistance with meal planning, grocery shopping, and food preparation.
- Ensure clients have adequate financial support by helping them gain employment and apply for entitlements.
- Teach money-management skills and assist clients in accessing financial services.
- Help clients access reliable transportation.
- Assist and support clients in obtaining and effectively using primary care physicians, dentists, and other medical specialists.
- Provide side-by-side support, coaching, and encouragement to help clients socialize.
- Assist clients in planning and carrying out leisure time activities.
- Organize and lead social and recreational activities to help clients structure their time, increase social experiences, and practice social skills.
- Provide practical help and support, mentoring, advocacy, coordination, side-by-side individualized support, problem-solving, direct assistance, and supervision to help clients obtain necessities of daily living, including healthcare, legal services, financial support, housing, money management, and transportation.
Requirements
- Must meet the requirements of 201 KRS 309.0831 for Temporary Registered Alcohol and Drug Peer Support Specialist.
- Submit to and pass a criminal record check, driver check, and drug screening.

Experience Level
- At least two years of paid or volunteer work experience with adults with severe and persistent substance use disorder
Education Level
- College degree in a human services field
- High school diploma
